CASTELLO SVEVO DI BARI – BEFORE THE CASTLE (BARI MUSEUM)

Before the Castle is a new multimedia installation dedicated to the Byzantine archaeological sites.

The story of the Castello Svevo began in 1131 when Norman King Roger II initiated its construction in an area bordering the sea, north of the promontory where the old city of Bari still thrives today. Since ancient times, this area had been inhabited and fortified, but in the two centuries before the long siege and Norman conquest, Bari evolved into a wealthy and densely populated medieval city with narrow streets and houses tightly clustered together, much like it is now.

The first construction by King Roger II in 1131 marked the beginning of a centuries-long history of the castle’s building and rebuilding. Archaeological excavations, like a "stone book" with visible pages, reveal the vitality of the ancient Byzantine city that existed before the castle.
